It appears his chances to catch the records of Randy Moss are completely gone now. “I’m no longer a Seahawk,” Terrell Owens wrote on Twitter. “I THANK the organization 4 the opportunity, I’m truly blessed beyond belief. My FAITH is intact & will NOT waiver.”

Owens had signed a one-year deal with Seattle on August 7th after a workout that had coaches and staff members raving about how good he looked for someone who had not played an NFL game in more than 18 months; but his preseason performance was notable for the catches he failed to make. T.O. dropped a potential 46-yard touchdown pass against Denver on a perfect throw. He did not catch any of the five balls thrown to him and had another glaring drop against Kansas City on Friday night.

Owens was trying to make a comeback after not playing since Week 15 of the 2010 season while with Cincinnati. He sat out the 2011 season after he had an operation on his left knee and did not receive any offers. Where he goes now is anyone’s guess. Back to an alternate football league? Canadian? Arena? United Football League?

Megatron. That sums up the new contract that Detroit Lions star receiver Calvin Johnson Jr extended to yesterday. Last season’s breadwinners were Michael Vick (6 years / $100 million) and Larry Fitzgerald (8 years / $120 million). The Cardinals receiver was the highest paid receiver of all time.

Johnson has signed an eight-year deal worth up to $132 million, making him the now-highest-paid receiver in the NFL. Am I the only San Francisco 49er fan that doesn’t want to see Randy Moss dress up in the red & gold?

I do not feel as if an aged veteran, arguably the 2nd best wide receiver in the history of football, has a place on the 49ers. Sure, SF lost to the (eventual Super Bowl winning) New York Giants with only 1 pass for 3 yards to a receiver. It’s common knowledge that Jed York, Jim Harbaugh, Trent Balke, and company will be looking for a few wideouts before the season starts. But folks, let’s go young. Just about anyone who watches football knows that the Saints have one of the best high-powered offenses in the National Football League. Quarterback Drew Brees consistently has 11 guys who catch a football from him at some point in the game. The guy who has been on the top of that list for 6 years is Marques Colston, who is about to hit the free agent market.

The Saints have numerous players they need to lock up before free agency starts; it begin with Drew Brees, but no one knows when it will end, or with whom. With the emergence of Tight End Jimmy Graham, can the Saints afford to let Colston go instead of signing him to another 5 years?

Colston was a 6th round draft pick out of Hofstra, essentially a no-namer. He is still young at the age of 28, and across his 6 years he has 449 receptions going for 6,230 yards, averaging over 1,000 yards per season. View the highlight video:

It’s been awhile since I spoke of Mr TO, and his future football career. However with the new season coming up, the Cincinnati Bengals drafting an awesome new wide receiver, and the lack luster season despite Terrell Owens’ awesome statistics last season, he’ll be looking to play just one more year. Again.

Owens has been a receiving mercenary in recent years, bouncing from town to town trying to latch onto a winner. It didn’t work in Dallas, it didn’t work in Buffalo and the Bengals flopped last season.

But if there was a bright spot to Cincinnati’s disappointing campaign, it was Owens showing a flash of his younger self. His 72 catches for close to a 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns was his best year since 2008 when he was a Cowboy. The Bengals won’t be bringing him back next season, but if nothing else, Owens at least showed he still has some left in the tank.

My guess is the Jacksonville Jaguars – they’re in need of receivers and have a new quarterback this season. Let the veteran teach them how to play in the NFL.
