49ers could have the best quarterback since Young, Montana

But at what price? The 49ers know they are the best option for Peyton Manning. He’s 36 years old looking for the last few good years in the twilight of a great and successful NFL career.

With successful veteran Randy Moss new into the mix, and a veteran quarterback, both looking at first round Hall of Fame inductions, the San Francisco 49ers have a chance to build a team that can win it’s first Super Bowl since the days of Steve Young and Joe Montana. You know, when Jerry Rice was around.

Even with Denver, Tennessee, Arizona, Miami in hot pursuit of Peyton Manning, it was actually the ex-Colts QB who contacted the 49ers for an opportunity to play for the red & gold, instead of the blue & white. What about Alex Smith?

Where is the next home for Peyton Manning?

With the Colts achieving a negative 8 wins from their previous season, they’ve locked up the #1 overall draft pick next month, and will take Andrew Luck, as all coaching and administrative staff have stated. The 11-time Pro Bowl quarterback is being kicked to the curb, but will he go out as Joe Montana, Brett Favre and Johnny Unitas, playing for different teams?

Manning, who will turn 36 later this month, will perhaps become the most prized free agent in NFL history. The decision is not a surprise. Manning spent his 14-year career in Indianapolis, but he became expendable after a neck injury forced him to miss the 2011 season and the Colts collapsed without him, finishing tied for the worst record (2-14) with the St. Louis Rams. That put the Colts in position to select Manning’s successor, Andrew Luck, who will have as many lofty expectations to meet as Manning did. Luck will join a franchise that is substantially different from the one Manning elevated to greatness. Since the end of the season, the Colts’ owner, Jim Irsay, has cleaned house of most of the coaches and front-office executives who worked with Manning.

Peyton Manning has been the Colts’ quarterback for so long that the last quarterback to start a game before he got there was Jim Harbaugh, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, who could be among the teams that try to bring Manning in.  Continue reading “Where is the next home for Peyton Manning?” Where is the next home fo…

Who will be throwing the ball for the Niners next season?

With questions regarding who will be under center next season for the 49ers, I decided to hear your thoughts.

San Francisco has announced that the next starting quarterback is not on the roster. Alex and Troy Smith have not solidified their right to be a starter next season, and the 49ers have the 7th overall pick in the 2011 draft with a new head coach out of a successful college coaching career.

Vernon Davis stated he would not mind catching balls from either Kyle Orton (being replaced by Tim Tebow on the Broncos) or Donovan McNabb (being replaced by anybody on the Redskins). With Michael Vick going off the hinges this year, Kevin Kolb is available from the Eagles. Then there’s the possibility of Matt Leinart, released by the Cardinals, having a chance.

What do you think? Vote below — you can select up to two options.
