Wallace was a Scottish knight who, during the Wars of Scottish Independence, led a resistance against the English occupation. Much of what is known about his life is based on legend and the poem The Acts and Deeds of Sir William Wallace, Knight of Elderslie, written by 15th century minstrel Blind Harry. Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) celebrates the surrender of Japan, the last Axis power to yield, and the subsequent end of WWII. Though Japan’s surrender was announced on August 15th, the terms were not signed until September 2nd. One of the most famous images depicting the jubilation of V-J Day was shot in Times Square, NY, when Alfred Eisenstaedt, photographing for Life magazine, captured the moment a sailor embraced a nurse and kissed her.
